Vaudevillian Gus Visser sings the hit “Ma! He’s Making Eyes at Me” accompanied by a quacking duck. If you watch his right hand closely, you can see how he makes the duck quack along.
Gus Visser and His Singing Duck is in the National Film Registry, as I learned from the fine documentary These Amazing Shadows.
This is an early film test of sound motion picture technology from 1925. Remember that the first major sound feature, The Jazz Singer, didn’t open until October 1927. Sound movies had pushed silent films out of the mainstream by 1930.
Gus has also made my list of Worst Teeth in the Movies.
